Vallée des Merveilles (valley of wonders)
(4 days trek in the Mercantour mountain)
Here are a few illustrations and photos from a 4-day hike in the Vallée des Merveilles, which is in fact an open-air museum with some 40,000 rock engravings, most of them dating from around 3,300 BC. I highly recommend visiting this immense site with the Ministry of Culture guides present at the Merveilles refuge (several hours needed). These engravings illustrate the pastoral and spiritual life of the first shepherds of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, as evidenced by the famous "sacred path". I also recommend climbing Mont Bego, which rises to 2,872 metres and was the "sacred" mountain for the men of ancient times, not least because of the considerable number of lightning strikes it received.
